Info provided from my experience on social, with a little help from Brian Peters at Buffer. Here are 10 social media tips for businesses and entrepreneurs doing it themselves!
Dedicate time weekly to schedule posts, respond to comments, follow other profiles/businesses, share community content, etc. Make yourself known, don’t be idle.
Social media is about engagement, a two-way conversation between you and your audience. Like any marketing plan, social media needs time and dedication. Don’t give up!
Create a Social Media Strategy. What do you want to share and who do you want to share it with? What are your goals and objectives for social media? How will you know if you achieve them? Why are you using social media? Answer, “So, What?” All of this needs to be planned. Once you know the answers, you will have something to compare to a few months in – where you are succeeding and where you need to adjust.
Show off your personality and passion for yourself and your business. Followers love seeing behind the scenes and learning about the person behind the business. Show them who you are and why you do what you do. Share what makes you special, what makes you, you. Create and share a connection with your followers.
Listen to your audience (and know who they are!). Do you know who your audience is? Are they who you want to target? Make sure you are targeting and speaking to the right people. Listen to them, respond to them, engage with them. They will tell you what you what they want to see. What do your competitor’s audience say and do? That can provide insight into what works and what doesn’t.
Focus on one or two platforms. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many platforms, pick one or two and stick to them. Depending on the platforms and the audiences on each platform it is important to write different content for each. For example, you wouldn’t say the same thing on Instagram and LinkedIn. Facebook allows you to schedule posts right in the platform and third party apps such as Hootsuite, Later, and Tweekdeck will help you schedule posts on Instagram and Twitter.
Boost your top performing posts. If a post is doing well, help it out and reach a larger audience! You will know when a post is doing well by the organic reach and engagement it receives.
Experiment with different mediums. Try out photos, videos, stories, Instagram Highlights, different hashtags, etc. See what your audience responds to the best and see what you can use to reach a new audience. Plus, it can be fun!
Get the most out of content. Don’t spend too much time worrying about constantly creating new content. Re-purpose old content and keep it fresh. If it has worked in the past, it will work again. If it doesn’t work on one platform, try it out on a different one. If it didn’t work in one medium, try a different format.
All the content you create should have 2-3 shareable aspects. This means that you pair video and a link, a photo and a link, a status and a hashtag, etc. This will ensure that if one aspect doesn’t work for a user, there is a backup, there is a second way that a user could interact with your piece of content.
Don’t have a designer? Not a designer yourself? There is a great (free) tool you can use, it is called Canva. Use Canva to create simple designs for your social. Create a look and feel for your brand and keep it consistent across platforms, that way it will be recognizable to users. Creating Brand Guidelines for your brand can help you stay on track too.
